Sonus faber Gravis V

Gravis V is the intermediate high-end active subwoofer of Sonus faber's Gravis Collection — a sealed-box 12-inch design engineered as the low-frequency partner for the Homage Tradition and Reference collection loudspeakers. It sits between Gravis III (10-inch, Olympica-matched) and Gravis VI (dual 12-inch, top of the line), and it is the subwoofer Sonus faber pairs with Amati, Serafino, Guarneri, Il Cremonese, and Lilium in a full-range system.

The driver is a 320 mm (12-inch) long-throw unit with a double coil (4+4 ohm) and a trilaminated sandwich honeycomb cone — two outer layers of woven fiberglass with a Nomex honeycomb core between them, wrapped in a wide rubber surround. That construction gives the diaphragm extraordinary stiffness against the forces a subwoofer driver actually generates, and lets it move without flexure. Amplification is 850 watts from a Class AB stage — not the Class D common to most subwoofer amplifiers, which is why there is a substantial heatsink on the rear panel.

Frequency response reaches 20 Hz at the low end (Linkwitz 4th order roll-on, EQ1 setting) with the upper corner frequency user-adjustable. App control covers four selectable presets, continuously adjustable crossover from 40 to 150 Hz at 24 dB/oct, continuously adjustable 0 to 360 degree phase, up to eight parametric EQ filters, 1 to 20 ms of delay, automatic room calibration, and selectable auto power on/off. Inputs cover balanced XLR line, unbalanced RCA line (L / R / LFE), and a Neutrik 4-pole Speakon high-level for direct connection to a power amplifier's speaker outputs.

The cabinet is leather-wrapped with an artisan-finished wooden or lacquer top — available in matte Wenge, Walnut, or gloss Piano Black, so the subwoofer visually integrates with a Homage or Reference floorstander system rather than reading as a black box.
