Sonus faber Amati Supreme

The Amati Supreme takes the engineering Sonus faber developed for the Suprema and puts it into a cabinet a normal room can hold. The Voice of Sonus faber platform — the super tweeter, tweeter and Camelia midrange — carries across, as does the crossover component specification. What changes is the scale.

A transparent Y-shaped window in the top panel exposes the mid-high crossover section, which is an unusual thing for a loudspeaker manufacturer to do. It works because the crossover is worth looking at: Phase Coherent Level 3, hand-built to the same specification as the flagship, with points at 230, 300, 1,800 and 5,600 Hz.

The drive units mount to a CNC-machined aluminium flange set inside a cork structure whose shape was arrived at by computer simulation, managing airflow and acoustic load to flatten the response. The 165 mm Camelia midrange sits in its own sealed chamber; twin 220 mm woofers vent through the Stealth Ultraflex system. The result reaches 28 Hz at one end and 40 kHz at the other, at 91 dB sensitivity, handling 600 watts undistorted.

A rear-mounted adjustment allows the mid-high and mid-bass output to be tuned to the room rather than assumed. Finishes run from the matte metal Sabbia Oro and Terra Rossa to Sonus faber's signature 45-degree veneers in Wengé, Red and Graphite. Handcrafted in Vicenza.
