Product Details
The McIntosh MC901 is a Dual Mono amplifier — a single-channel chassis that houses two fully independent amplification stages, each with its own power supply, signal path, and McIntosh Autoformer output. The architecture is unique in the McIntosh amplifier catalog and unusual in the wider high-end audio market: rather than a single amplifier per chassis or a pair of matched monoblocks driving a stereo signal, the MC901 places two dissimilar amplifier types into one chassis, with the Autoformer output on each stage delivering full rated power into any speaker load.
The engineering rationale is that a single loudspeaker channel benefits from having distinct amplification tuned to the frequency ranges and impedance characteristics of the drivers it serves. Loudspeakers with separate bass and mid/treble input terminals (biwireable designs) can take one output stage on the bass drivers and the other output stage on the midrange and treble drivers, delivering the same benefit as a full biamp configuration with dedicated separate amplifiers — but in a single-chassis product from a single manufacturer engineered to work together.
Both amplifier stages carry the McIntosh signature engineering: Autoformer output for load-invariant power delivery, Quad Balanced topology on the solid-state stage, Power Guard clipping protection, Sentry Monitor short-circuit protection, and Solid Cinch speaker binding posts. Twin blue McIntosh watt meters on the front panel show real-time output from each amplifier stage. At LMC, the MC901 is available for audition in the Scottsdale showroom against the loudspeakers the client is considering pairing it with.
At $22,000 per unit in current McIntosh pricing (a stereo pair is two units), the MC901 is available for audition at Scottsdale. Walk in during business hours or book ahead for a prepared listening session against the specific loudspeakers you are considering — the MC901 is a distinctive amplifier architecture and the audition is where the argument for it becomes concrete.
