8TC is the cable that made Kimber’s reputation, and forty years into its production run it still gets described the way it was described in the 1980s: “the best sounding moderately priced cable on the market.” Sixteen TCSS conductors braided per channel — eight clear insulation, eight white — aggregating to 9 AWG per polarity, using the same hyper-pure oxygen-free electrolytic copper VariStrand construction as the 4TC below and the 12TC above.
The construction is Kimber’s original insight from 1979: braid the conductors instead of shielding them, and the shape of the woven array cancels the induced fields that plain parallel conductors generate. With sixteen conductors per channel, 8TC doubles 4TC’s conductor count for a heavier-gauge cable and more complex braid geometry, which increases both effective RFI rejection and total copper mass. Fluorocarbon (Teflon) dielectric encloses each conductor. Measured, the result is 346 pF per metre parallel capacitance, 0.09 µH per metre series inductance, and 0.008 Ω per metre DC loop resistance.
Copper conductivity is 102% IACS. Termination options run from bare wire through WBT NextGen banana or spade, with Kimber’s Postmaster locking spades available for standard and oversized binding posts. Available in single-wire, dedicated bi-wire (IBW — internal bi-wire, with one connection at the amp and two at the loudspeaker), and various single/bi-wire spade/banana combinations.
8TC sits in the middle of the Ascent tier, between 4TC and 12TC, and it is where a great many first-serious speaker cable purchases end up landing — because it has been so widely reviewed, because it has been in production so long, and because for a mid-to-upper-mid system it is difficult to spend the same money on anything with the same track record. Where the loudspeaker load or the room ask for more, 12TC steps up in the same architecture without changing the character of what it is doing.
