Dan D’Agostino Progression Preamplifier

The Progression Preamplifier is the natural control center for a Progression-line system — the line's industrial design and engineering standard applied to the preamplification stage, in machined aluminum with the copper accents that mark the house. It is the preamp Dan D'Agostino designed to sit upstream of the M550 monoblocks, the S350 stereo amplifier, and the Progression Integrated.

The engineering is concrete. The signal path is discrete, fully complementary and balanced from input to output, with no negative feedback anywhere — open-loop distortion below 0.006% and open-loop bandwidth past 100 kHz make it unnecessary. Volume is a stepped balanced resistor ladder switched through high-linearity solid-state relays and discrete precision resistors, so bandwidth and transient response are unaffected by level. The power supply lives in a separate, extensively shielded chassis to keep radiated interference away from the audio circuits, and two independent outputs support a second amplifier or subwoofers. An optional, field-upgradeable Digital Streaming Module adds coaxial, Toslink, and USB inputs through a fully differential DAC handling PCM to 24-bit/384 kHz and DSD to 11.2 MHz.

The demonstration that makes the case is in Tempe, and it is a deliberately provocative one: the Progression Preamplifier runs with Progression electronics on Wilson TuneTot — a stand-mount small enough for a desk, given electronics from the line directly below Momentum. That is the opposite of the usual approach to a small loudspeaker, and it is exactly the point: put genuinely serious control and amplification in front of a small Wilson and hear how much of the reference-room experience survives the reduction in scale.
