Stewart Filmscreen Director’s Choice

Director's Choice is Stewart's four-way masking system and the most complete answer to a problem every serious cinema runs into: content arrives in several aspect ratios, and a fixed screen can only be correct for one of them. Four individually motorized panels move independently across the screen, so any ratio can be stored at any scale rather than chosen from a short list of presets.

The EVO generation reduced the border to 6.5 inches and increased the image by thirty percent, with all masking hidden behind the fascia. Maximum image area is 96 by 192 inches — up to 215 inches diagonal. The native all-open area is specified to match the projector rather than assumed, and any Stewart 16K+ front projection fabric can be fitted, including MicroPerf X² THX Ultra where loudspeakers sit behind the screen.

Masking matters more than it sounds. Black cloth over the unused portion of the screen raises perceived contrast considerably, because the eye judges black level against whatever borders the image. Control runs from the supplied digital controller or through a third-party system, which is how it belongs in a room already running Crestron, Control4 or Savant.
