Description
The McIntosh ML1 Mk II is a 2023 reissue of McIntosh's very first loudspeaker — the original ML1, launched in 1970 and discontinued in 1977. External design carries the same oiled American walnut solid-wood cabinet and satin-finish veneers as the 1970 original, complete with matching stands featuring vintage die-cast aluminum name badges that match the badges on McIntosh's classic amplifiers. Internally the Mk II is a full contemporary redesign — nothing but the aesthetic vocabulary carries forward.
The 4-way sealed cabinet houses five drivers per speaker: a 12-inch polypropylene-cone woofer in a sealed enclosure, two 4-inch lower-midrange drivers in a sealed sub-enclosure arranged horizontally, a 2-inch soft-dome upper midrange positioned between them, and a 0.75-inch titanium dome tweeter — the same tweeter used in the XR50, XR100, and LCR80 for family voicing continuity. Crossover points at 180 Hz, 500 Hz, and 4,500 Hz avoid dividing the critical vocal range. Frequency response extends from 27 Hz (deep enough to skip a subwoofer in typical rooms) up to 45 kHz. Sensitivity is 85 dB — the Mk II likes power, and 75-to-600-watt handling accommodates it.
The natural amplifier pairing is a McIntosh tube integrated or a tube preamp-and-amp chain. The ML1 Mk II is period-styled to voice with the C22 preamp and MC275 tube amp that share its visual vocabulary, and LMC's Tempe showroom offers exactly that context — a vintage McIntosh tube system with the C22 preamp and MC275 tube amplifier that period-matches the ML1 Mk II's design vocabulary.
