Product Details

Description

The McIntosh C8 is McIntosh’s entry-tier vacuum tube 2-channel preamplifier — the accessible-tier alternative to the C22 Mk V (retro-styled tube preamp) and C2800 (reference-tier tube preamp). All three share vacuum tube preamplification character but at different feature-set and price tiers, and the C8 is the natural entry into McIntosh tube preamplification for listeners moving up from an integrated amplifier or from a solid-state preamp who want to hear what the tube signal path adds.

Vacuum tube gain stages use the classic McIntosh tube topology that has defined the brand’s preamplifier range since its earliest days. Five analog inputs cover a typical source count at the tier. Optional DA2 Digital Audio Module can be added to enable digital inputs: USB (24-bit/384kHz PCM, DSD512), coaxial, optical, MCT, and HDMI ARC. Without the module, the C8 is a pure all-analog design; with it, the C8 becomes a source-inclusive tube preamplifier for systems where the digital source and tube preamplifier live in one chassis.

Bass and Treble tone controls (defeatable). McIntosh signature aesthetics with black glass front, blue meters, illuminated logo. Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs to any McIntosh power amplifier. In an all-McIntosh system, the C8 pairs naturally with the MC275 or MC1502 vacuum tube power amps (for an all-tube signal path) or with any McIntosh solid-state amplifier (for the classic hybrid combination of tube preamp plus solid-state power).

At $4,500 in current McIntosh pricing, the C8 is available at LMC. Walk in during business hours or book ahead for a prepared listening session against the specific system architecture you are considering — the C8 is often the natural first tube preamplifier for listeners assembling their first serious McIntosh system.
