Description

Few electronic components are regarded as legendary within the high-end audio community. The MBL 6010 achieved that status in the 1980s and has held it ever since — known internationally simply as Der Vorverstärker, The Preamplifier, its name inscribed in 24-carat gold lettering on the lacquered acrylic faceplate. Originally designed as the comparison tool for MBL's own development lab, it became the control center of dealers' listening studios and then the reference solid-state preamplifier for listeners worldwide. The current 6010 D carries more than three decades of continuous refinement.

Volume is governed by a custom-designed precision analog potentiometer with high tracking accuracy between channels — electrostatically and magnetically shielded, with effective synchronous two-channel operation — which is what gives the 6010 D its famous image dimensionality and soundstage width. Seven analogue inputs (two CD, high level/tuner, two tape, processor pass-through, and XLR) can each be level-trimmed independently, plus an option slot for an MC phono module with enough gain for low-output cartridges. Two separately adjustable output groups — each with one XLR and two RCA outputs and its own channel-to-channel level control — let the 6010 D drive two amplifier systems at once. Two tape outputs with a record selector support read-after-write monitoring.

Solid brass dials handle input selection and volume. The power supply uses low-drop technology with a shielded transformer, producing signal-to-noise figures of up to 109 dB. At 22 kg, the baroque, oversized chassis is instantly recognizable — and it remains The Absolute Sound's Editor's Choice year after year. Handbuilt in Berlin.
