Product Details
The gold-plated top of the MBL 1621 A evokes the form and size of a 12-inch LP — and the ritual matches. Lift the airtight drive cover, machined from a solid billet of aluminum and perfectly balanced on an ample hinge; insert the CD; secure it with the custom stabilizer puck; close the cover. The precision-milled spiral form inside the lid is not decoration: it reduces air turbulence in the drive chamber so the disc, spinning at 200 to 500 rpm, rotates stably and error-free while the rubber-gasketed cover seals the chamber into complete silence.
The Philips CD PRO 2 LF mechanism is suspended on a heavy sandwich sub-chassis of brass, aluminium, and Terodem insulation material, itself spring-mounted at three points on vibration absorbers of highly damping polyurethane polymer. The suspension's resonance frequency is tuned to 13 Hz — clear of both the lowest audio frequency and the CD's highest rotation frequency — and integrated height adjustment levels the drive precisely, like a fine turntable. The stabilizer puck is itself a sandwich of brass, aluminum, and magnesium under a damping coating, with two rubber rings pressing the disc onto the tray for precision contact.
Electronically, a Mu-metal-shielded toroidal transformer, separate voltage regulators for each of ten function groups, separate power supplies for music and control signals, and a group-delay-optimized bi-phase signal path feed digital outputs with 40 MHz bandwidth. Paired with the 1611 F DAC, the 1621 A delivers the composed, unruffled calm so often missing from digital sources. Handbuilt in Berlin.
