Octave V 40 SE Integrated Amplifier

The Octave V 40 SE is the current entry-level integrated amplifier in Octave's range — a line-level integrated with 2 x 40 W peak output power that is a further development and direct descendant of the earlier V 40 and V 50 amplifier models. Powerful, clear bass fundamentals and captivating high-frequency resolution have earned the V 40 SE much respect — including the rare 'Stereoplay Highlight' award from Germany's Stereoplay magazine (issue 07-2009).

The V 40 SE output stage uses two power pentodes (Type 6550 JJ) per channel. Octave's BIAS Control and Monitoring System allows the use of other pin-compatible output tubes to match the amplifier to personal taste or benefit from newer tube types — KT 88, KT 90, KT 100, or 6550 tubes will operate at full 40Wpc, while 6L6, KT 66, KT 77, 5881, or EL34 pentodes can be substituted at lower power. Like all Octave amps, the V 40 SE is based on Octave's enhanced pentode configuration — the circuit that ensures absolute stability against unstable loudspeaker impedance. Impedance mismatch is without consequence; the V 40 SE is stable down to a 2-ohm load.

A single-impedance output transformer contributes significantly to this stability. The V 40 SE is a perfect amp for average-efficiency loudspeakers, but the exceptional signal-to-noise ratio of -110 dB at full power also makes it an ideal partner for high-efficiency loudspeakers.
