Carbon 18 XL is the largest of the three Carbon loudspeaker cables and the one intended for full-range loudspeakers with genuinely extended bass — the demanding low-impedance loads that fill the Scottsdale rooms. Eighteen conductors braided into an aggregate 8 AWG per polarity, using Kimber’s oxygen-free copper VariStrand.
What differentiates Carbon 18 XL from the smaller Carbon 16 and Carbon 8 is a central 14.5 AWG bundle running as a non-twisted parallel straight line — the shortest distance between two points — filled in with a carbon-based polymer and then wrapped in the Carbon braid architecture. Kimber’s argument for the straight central run is DC resistance: keeping it as low as possible over a wide bandwidth allows better amplifier damping into demanding loudspeakers. Around that central bundle sits the outer Carbon braid, a low-loss fluorocarbon dielectric, and hand-soldered nitrogen-assisted terminations to WBT spades or bananas.
The Carbon series sits above Summit and below Select in the Kimber ladder. Where the differences between the three Carbon models matter most is at the bottom of the frequency range and in systems resolving enough to show it: the larger the cable, the more control there is over a demanding low-impedance load. A full-range floor-standing loudspeaker in a serious room is where Carbon 18 XL earns its place.
Carbon 18 XL is worth hearing against the Select KS 6063 before deciding — the step is not always the obvious one. Where Select’s braided reference architecture pulls one way, Carbon 18 XL’s straight central run and larger overall cross-section pulls another, and either can be the right answer depending on the loudspeaker. Walk in during business hours or book ahead if the audition needs the actual electronics and loudspeakers in place for that comparison.
