Product Details
The Burmester 088 is the Top Line preamplifier — one tier below the Reference Line 077 and 808 MK5, and the model most Burmester system owners actually build their systems around. Fully balanced with XLR throughout, dual-mono topology for maximum channel separation, DC-coupled signal paths without distorting capacitors in the audio path, and the resonance-damping chassis suspension Burmester carries down from the Reference Line.
The chassis is the iconic Top Line: chrome front panel manufactured through Burmester’s multi-stage chroming process, two large rotary dials for input selection and volume, chromed toggle switches for operating modes, and the engraved Burmester signature. Every screw bolting the front panel to the chassis is individually chrome-plated and inspected — the manufacturing discipline that separates Burmester from every competitor at the tier.
Two optional modules extend the 088’s role in a Burmester system: a digital module using the same upsampling DAC technology as the Reference Line 077 (S/PDIF and USB slave inputs, upsampling to 96 or 192 kHz), and a phono module for moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridges. Configured with either or both, the 088 becomes a source-inclusive preamplifier for systems that do not require external source specialization. At LMC, the 088 anchors the Sonus faber SE room system, driving 909 MK5 monoblocks with a 948 Power Conditioner in front and a Linn Klimax DSM as digital source — the most extensive Top Line preamplifier demonstration in the portfolio.
At $37,000 in current Burmester pricing, the 088 is available for audition at the Scottsdale showroom in the Sonus faber SE room. Walk in during business hours or book ahead — the SE room is the honest demonstration of what the 088 does in a full Top Line signal chain.
