Description

The Burmester 257 is the Reference Line turntable delivered as a complete analog instrument — turntable, tonearm, cartridge, and phono stage engineered as one system and aligned at the factory before it ever reaches the listening room. It is Burmester's answer to a specific buyer: the one who wants reference vinyl playback without becoming a turntable hobbyist to get it.

The engineering premise is integration. Belt drive with precision motor control turns the platter at 33 1/3 and 45 RPM. The tonearm and cartridge arrive factory-configured and aligned — tracking geometry, force, and alignment set by the people who built the system, not left as homework. The phono stage is built in, engineered specifically for the cartridge it amplifies, with loading and gain already correct. The output is balanced XLR straight into a Burmester preamplifier, keeping the fully balanced architecture intact from stylus to loudspeaker.

What the integration eliminates is the entire failure surface of conventional analog: no cartridge shopping, no VTA experiments, no loading trials, no phono-stage matching anxiety. You lower the needle onto the record and hear what the mastering engineer approved. For listeners who enjoy that experimentation, Burmester builds the 175 — turntable and arm supplied together, with cartridge and phono stage chosen per configuration. The 257 is for everyone who would rather the engineering be finished.

In a Reference Line system — 249 or 808 MK5 preamplification, 259 or 909 MK5 power — the 257 completes the analog side with a single decision. Hear it in Scottsdale against a 175-based configuration to feel where each philosophy lands; walk in during business hours or book ahead.
