The MBL 101 X-Treme MKIII anchors the MBL Room at LMC Scottsdale, driven by Dan D’Agostino Progression M550 monoblocks and the Progression Preamplifier. Sales Consultant Landon Williams — who began his hi-fi career as an installer specializing in high-end speaker setup — shares his take on MBL’s flagship.
MBL’s flagship, three generations on
Originally introduced in 2007, the MBL 101 X-Treme is now in its third generation and remains the company’s flagship four-piece loudspeaker system, incorporating virtually all of MBL’s core technologies. Weighing more than 2,100 pounds, the 101 X-Treme delivers an enormous, room-filling presentation without requiring the listener to sit directly between the speakers.
Its spherical, 360-degree Radialstrahler drivers and omnidirectional design create an exceptionally wide and immersive soundstage, with layers of depth and ambient information that extend well beyond the speakers themselves. The result is an unusually three-dimensional presentation that can be enjoyed from virtually anywhere in the room and remains effortless and engaging over long listening sessions.
A “concert hall” character
To my ears, the 101 X-Treme has a distinctly “concert hall” character, with an abundance of ambient cues and a large, enveloping soundstage that draws you into the recording. It is a loudspeaker that feels equally at home with intimate recordings and large-scale orchestral or live performances, while maintaining an impressive sense of space, coherence, and naturalness.
What the MKIII refines
Now in its MKIII iteration, the 101 X-Treme further refines the performance of its colossal subwoofer modules, which flank the large D’Appolito-style array of Radialstrahler 360-degree drivers. With twelve 12-inch drivers capable of reaching down to 17 Hz, the system can deliver tremendous low-frequency authority and slam when called upon, yet retains the speed, control, and delicacy necessary to reveal the smallest details in a recording.
It is this combination of scale, dynamics, resolution, and effortless room-filling presentation that makes the 101 X-Treme such a unique loudspeaker.
The 101 X-Treme MKIII is on demonstration in the MBL Room at LMC Scottsdale, alongside the 101 E MKII and 120 MKII. Walk in during business hours, or book ahead for an extended session with Landon.
