XL-tier tonearm cable — bridge between Reference Phono and Opus Phono, larger CFC + IFER network matched more closely to cartridge output.

Product Details

Description

The XL Phono Interconnect (RCA) is the tonearm-to-phono-stage cable that bridges Reference and Opus within Transparent’s ULTIMATE (CONNOISSEUR) collection — the cable to move to when Reference Phono has been outgrown and Opus Phono is the next-decade target. XL Phono uses the same cable, connectors, and network housing architecture as XL RCA Interconnect, retuned inside the network for the delicate low-voltage signal a moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridge generates rather than the line-level signal an RCA interconnect handles. The larger Gen 6 carbon fiber composite (CFC) network modules and more comprehensive IFER (Integrated Flexible Epoxy Resin) mass-loading are the physical step up over Reference Phono.

Compared to Reference Phono, XL’s network components are chosen and matched more closely to the electrical characteristics of the cable and its exact length, and the network itself is calibrated more precisely to the electrical output characteristics of your specific cartridge. Custom-machined gold-plated RCA connectors mate to precision-wound OFHC stranding, with a mini-spade ground wire standard. Optional custom DIN termination is available at the tonearm end, fabricated to precise tonearm, turntable suspension, and phono preamp requirements. Optional differential-balanced termination is available at the phono-stage end for true balanced phono preamps — that variant is sold as XL Phono Balanced. The performance step over Reference Phono typically shows up as extended low-level detail, quieter noise floor, and more accurate transmission of the delicate cartridge output.

XL Phono is designed for connoisseur-tier vinyl chains where the turntable, tonearm, cartridge, and phono stage are all resolving enough that Reference Phono has become the limiting element. Because the network is calibrated to a specific chain — tonearm, cartridge, and phono stage — Transparent needs all three specified before manufacture. Level-matched ULTIMATE companions include XL RCA, XL Balanced, XL Speaker Cable, and XL Power Cord. Fully upgradeable to Opus or Magnum Opus Phono through Transparent’s Upgrade Program, with original investment retained. Warranty registration extends to lifetime and entitles owners to free network recalibration when a cartridge change requires network adjustment.

Phono cables reward audition in the actual chain more than any other category — the interaction between cartridge output, cable calibration, and phono-stage input is specific enough that a generic demo can’t reveal what XL delivers over Reference. Walk in during business hours or book ahead if the audition is a Reference-vs-XL comparison and the actual turntable, cartridge, and phono stage need to be part of the test.
