REL Classic 99 Powered Subwoofer

Classic 99 is the larger of REL's two Classic models and, like its smaller sibling, it is deliberately not part of the main line. The Classic pair exist for systems built around vintage equipment or its modern equivalents — valve amplification, British mini-monitors, high-sensitivity single-driver and coaxial designs — where REL's usual emphasis on speed and attack can sit slightly at odds with the character of the system it is joining.

Where Classic 98 uses a 10-inch driver on 300 watts, Classic 99 steps up to a 12-inch paper-on-paper driver on a 450W Class D amplifier. It plays louder, reaches deeper, and — more usefully — resolves more, adding air and nuance the smaller model does not reach while keeping the same easy, room-filling character. Intended for larger rooms and more capable systems. The genuine dark walnut veneer is the point as much as the driver is: this is a subwoofer designed to sit in a room where the rest of the equipment has wood on it.
