MBL N31 Noble Line CD-DAC

The MBL N31 unifies a world-class CD transport with a state-of-the-art digital-to-analog converter in one sculpted Noble Line chassis — and optionally, with its Roon module fitted, becomes a Roon Ready streaming endpoint as well. Stereophile's John Atkinson found it simply magnificent, and the N31 has collected Stereophile Recommended Component listings alongside its Audiophilia Product of the Year 2020 award.

At its heart is the converter debate resolved with classic MBL ingenuity: 1-Bit Delta-Sigma designs excel at low signal levels, Multibit at high ones, so the N31 combines both — with the handover distributed across four paths that switch at four different levels, making the transition imperceptible. Three user-selectable digital reconstruction filters tailor playback to the recording: Minimum Phase (the default, eliminating pre-ringing for naturally recorded acoustic music), Fast Roll-Off (crisper attack and harder-hitting bass for studio productions), and Slow Roll-Off (a rounder, more natural expression for mixed forms). MBL's True Peak Technology builds a three-decibel modulation reserve into the digital filters, eliminating the intersample-overload clipping that hard-mastered CDs and files force on conventional DAC chips.

The engineering discipline runs deep: three stages of jitter reduction, a fully balanced signal path from converter to output stage, group-delay-optimized analog output filtering, an ingeniously damped CD drive suspension protecting the laser optics, and unused circuitry — including the crystal oscillators — placed into sleep mode so nothing disturbs the sensitive analog sections. USB inputs run with their own Master Clock for bit-perfect, jitter-free transfer, including directly from an iPhone or iPad. A 5-inch color display shows track data and album art, and standby draws a single watt. Handbuilt in Berlin.
